Community Upgrade: Business Improvement Grant (BIG) 🏪
GUYMON- The City of Guymon’s Business Improvement Grant is designed to support local business growth and reinvestment by helping offset the cost of exterior, structural, landscaping, and compliance related improvements. Created in 2022, Economic Development Director Sheila Martin, and point of contact for the grant, has worked to promote the grant and ensure it is accessible for every business in Guymon. “The Business Improvement Grant was designed to empower our local businesses with the tools they need to grow, reinvest, and improve our downtown landscape. It’s incredibly rewarding to see it working just as intended — and even more exciting to see the creative transformations our business owners are bringing to life,” Martin shared.
Since its inception, the Business Improvement Grant has approved over $52,000 in funding across 12 local businesses, which in turn has generated more than $157,000 in total community improvements. From fresh coats of paint and new signage to safer, more compliant structures and inviting storefronts, the program is actively shaping the look and feel of Guymon’s business corridors.
Eligible improvements include façade upgrades, signage, property renovations, landscaping (with enhanced incentives for water wise ‘zero scape’ projects), and code compliance work — including for mobile food vendors. The City will reimburse up to 50 % of eligible improvement costs (up to $5,000), and up to 75 % for approved zero scaping, making this a meaningful investment in the vitality and appearance of our business community.
To qualify for the BIG program, applicants must operate for a for-profit business within Guymon city limits, be current on all State, County, and City taxes, hold a valid Oklahoma sales tax certificate, and ensure proposed improvements comply with all local regulations. If a business meets the requirements, they are eligible to apply for any of the five categories included in the grant: Façade Improvement, Sign Improvement, Property Improvement, Landscaping Improvement and Compliance Improvements.
The Business Improvement Grant serves as support for businesses to enhance their storefronts and commercial properties. The City of Guymon hopes to promote economic vitality, encourage reinvestment in Guymon’s businesses and commit to long-term economic development and quality of life by offering a meaningful financial incentive.

Commercial Fire Alarm Leads to a Common Problem During Freezing Times ⛑🔥
GUYMON- Monday afternoon, Guymon Firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Guymon Walmart located at 2402 N. Hwy 64. “On Firefighters arrival, no reports of smoke or fire were present, but the sounding of the building fire alarm was going off”, said Guymon Fire Marshal Jason Bond. A fast search found that a section of fire sprinkler pipe had burst due to recent freezing conditions.
This is not an unusual event for buildings that have sprinkler systems that get exposed to freezing weather. Water in the lines freezes which causes swelling of the pipes, then burst under continuous pressure. The Guymon Fire Department each year responds to similar calls which occur often at local motels, schools, medical facilities, churches, etc. This specific break at Walmart was near the garden section and did not affect customers or associates. At no time was there a risk to anyone in the building. Walmart remained open with special Fire Watch guidelines in place by the Fire Marshal Office. Repairs are expected within the next 24 hours.

Important Natural Gas Prices Update ⚠️
GUYMON- As many across the country have experienced, the recent Arctic cold front has caused natural gas prices to skyrocket. Due to production freeze-offs and increased demand from the winter storm, national spot prices have surged to between $35 and $100 per unit.
The City of Guymon has been able to protect our community from the worst of this spike thanks to pre-planned purchasing. Our current rate is $9.38 per unit, which is already significantly lower than what most other areas are facing.
To provide additional relief, the Guymon City Council has called a Special Meeting tonight to officially set a new reduced rate of $6.45 per unit, effective with the first billing cycle in February 2026. This is an intentional move to support our residents during a time of regional volatility and increased heating costs.
