Red Flag Warning High Fire Danger Today and Tomorrow 🚨
Today, the National Weather Service out of Amarillo has placed Texas County under a Red Flag Warning. This warning will be for the remainder of today and go through tomorrow Friday, January 16th. “The Guymon Fire Department, Texas County Sheriff Office, Texas County 911 Center, and Emergency Management are continually at a high awareness level of fire danger, but with an issued Red Flag warning it becomes increasingly critical”, said Guymon Fire Chief Grant Wadley. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will be expected. Combination of strong winds, low humidity, and warmer than normal temperatures create favorable conditions for rapid fire growth. Avoid activities that promote open flames and sparks including any control burns which are discouraged. Vehicle drivers and operators, be vigilant of trailer chains dragging, tire conditions, trailer brakes, and/or any situation that may cause sparks or flames along the highways. If you should see the start of smoke or fire, please call 911 immediately during this time.

Offices will reopen on Tuesday, January 20th.

City Council Awards Tracy Bowers with Proclamation
GUYMON- Yesterday evening, Guymon Council held their regularly scheduled council meeting. All council members were present- City Manager Mike Shannon, Sergio Alvidrez, Jason Eidson, Mayor Kim Peterson, Garrett Helton, Geraldine Sanchez, as well as Treasurer Lynn Hoffman and City Attorney David Petty.
The meeting commenced with the Proclamation Commemorating the Retirement of Public Works Director Tracy Bowers for his 42 years of service. Bowers’ career with the City of Guymon began in 1984 with his official retirement date on January 9, 2026. Bowers demonstrated strong leadership with a deep compassion for his community.
After passing motions to approve prior meeting minutes, Claims Registers, payroll for the previous month, Resolution No. 26-01 and 02, the Agreement between the City of Guymon and the International Association of Firefighters, council members discussed approving the Agreement between the City of Guymon and Ardurra Group Inc. to provide services to Sunset Lake. This agreement would include integrating a raw water line from Well No. 24 to discharge to Sunset Lake.
Council members tabled Item 10, Authorizing the Execution of a Maintenance Agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) for Installation of Highway Illumination at SH-3 / US-412 & SH-136 to further discuss with ODOT, recommended by Shannon.
Next, council discussed and approved the appointment of Kim Baker as the new Municipal Judge. Shannon elaborated that she has done a great job stepping in for Mr. Petty and would be a good judge for the City. This followed with the discussion and approval of the proposed 2025 budget amendments, presented by Finance Director Rhonda Hindergardt. Hindergardt stated that revenue looked better than previous years.
To conclude, Main Street Director Ronni Wilson gave her monthly report and advised that Career Focus had kicked off and was going well and shared that Main Street had received a $10,000 grant from the Cherokee Strip Community Foundation that will be utilized to work on the Main Street Building. The Chamber of Commerce Director, Erica Maddox followed to update council on future events, such as the Meet and Greet with Darrell Weaver. Council then adjourned for the Utilities Authority Meeting where everything passed.
The next scheduled Council Meeting is set for February 10, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

GUYMON- Thursday afternoon at 4:38pm, Guymon Fire Department with assistance from Guymon Police, Texas County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Texas County Emergency Management responded to a 911 call of a structure fire at 3182 Townview Lane on the northeast edge of Guymon.
On Guymon Firefighters’ arrival, they found heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from the rear portion of a mobile home. Firefighters quickly entered and contained the raging fire to one end of the mobile home. “Home was occupied at the time by Adilene Salcido of Guymon and 6 children”, stated Guymon Fire Chief Grant Wadley. All occupants of the home escaped without injury before Firefighters arrival.
Guymon Fire Marshal’s Office investigated finding the cause to be from a dryer in the rear of the home. “It appeared an over abundance of collected clothing lint led to the start of the fire then spread from the dryer to the interior of the room it was located in”, said Chief Wadley.
Texas County Emergency Management and Red Cross are involved in the well-being for the family. Dryer fires are common and can easily be avoided by cleaning your lint traps and exhaust outlets for overabundance of collection. Be vigilant of keeping these areas free of collected lint or debris.

Update from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation⚠️:
"The Beaver River bridge north of Guymon on US-64 is currently narrowed to one lane controlled by temporary signal lights. The bridge is undergoing repairs which include deck replacement, approach slabs, and new asphalt approaches. The bridge is being reconstructed half at a time, with the southbound lane currently closed. The contractor anticipates pouring the southbound deck in the middle of March and plans to switch traffic and begin demo of the northbound lane early May. These dates are dependent on weather conditions. Travelers should note that width restriction of 10’ wide and a height restriction of 14’6” due to the traffic lights is currently in place with DPS. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation urges drivers to use caution in the work zone, obey all posted speed limits and traffic signals, put away distractions, and remain alert for workers and equipment.
For questions or concerns, please contact the Guymon ODOT office at (580) 338-3545."
