City of Guymon Mourns the Passing of Former Mayor Jessie Nelson

Guymon, OK— June 8, 2026

The City of Guymon joins the Nelson family, friends, and the entire community in mourning the passing of former Mayor Jess Nelson, a dedicated public servant whose leadership and commitment helped shape the City of Guymon for generations.

Mr. Nelson devoted many years of service to the citizens of Guymon through his work on the City Council and as Mayor. Throughout his public service, he was known for his steady leadership, practical wisdom, and unwavering dedication to improving the quality of life for the residents of Guymon. His legacy can be seen throughout the community he loved and served so faithfully.

Current Mayor Kim Peterson reflected on Mr. Nelson's impact on the city and its citizens:

"Jessie Nelson represented the very best of public service. He cared deeply about Guymon and the people who call it home. His leadership helped guide our community through important periods of growth and change, and his commitment to serving others set an example for all who followed him. On behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Guymon, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Nelson family and all who were blessed to know him."

City Manager Micheal Shannon, who had the privilege of serving under Mr. Nelson's leadership, also shared his thoughts:

"Jessie Nelson was a mentor, a leader, and a true gentleman. During my time working with him, I witnessed firsthand his devotion to the City of Guymon and his sincere desire to do what was best for our community. He approached every challenge with integrity, common sense, and respect for others. I am personally grateful for the opportunity to have served under Mayor

Nelson and to have learned from his example. His influence on this community and on those who worked alongside him will not be forgotten."

The City of Guymon extends its deepest sympathy to the Nelson family during this time of loss. While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life dedicated to service, leadership, and community. May the memories of Jess Nelson's life and accomplishments continue to inspire future generations of public servants and community leaders.

Please keep the Nelson family in your thoughts and prayers as they honor and remember a man whose contributions to Guymon will endure for years to come.

CITY OF GUYMON RECEIVES ODEQ APPROVAL FOR WATER WELL PROJECT CONSTRUCTION PLANS

Guymon, OK – The City of Guymon is pleased to announce that the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) has approved the construction plans for the City's water supply expansion project.

The approval marks a significant milestone in the City's ongoing efforts to strengthen and secure Guymon's long-term water infrastructure. With ODEQ approval now in place, the project will move into Phase II, which consists of the drilling and development of new production wells.

City staff and project engineers are currently preparing bid documents and specifications for Phase II, and the project is expected to be advertised for competitive bids in the near future.

The new production wells are a critical component of the City's strategy to increase water supply capacity, improve system reliability, and meet the current and future needs of residents, businesses, agriculture, and industry throughout the region.

City Manager Micheal Shannon emphasized that this achievement reflects the dedication and perseverance of many individuals throughout the organization.

"While ODEQ's approval is an important milestone, this accomplishment belongs to the entire City of Guymon team," said Shannon. "Major infrastructure projects such as this do not happen because of one person. They are made possible through the hard work, commitment, and collaboration of many dedicated public servants."

Shannon specifically recognized the contributions of Mack McKinley, Sheila Martin, Steven Pierce, Susan Paddock, Kurt McKane, Steve Christian, Josh Mitchell, and retired employee Tracy Bowers, whose efforts were instrumental in advancing the project through planning, engineering coordination, administration, regulatory compliance, and project development.

He further noted that every City employee has played a role in making this project possible.

"Our 150 employees are the backbone of this organization," Shannon said. "Whether working in utilities, public works, administration, finance, engineering, public safety, parks, customer service, or countless other functions, each employee contributes to the success of our community and to projects like this one. This milestone reflects the collective effort of an entire team dedicated to serving the citizens of Guymon."

Additional information regarding the bidding process and project schedule will be released as Phase II advances.
